What Would You Do? |

Tim,
What would you do?
We have 2 home PCs: ●the one with RAID drive is making a whining noise & we’re afraid it is going to go out ●the other is a Dell ●HP Officejet 7110 – all-in-one - not wireless - tied into Bee’s PC ●Deskjet 970Cse ●Both are XP Home ●NetGear router WPN824 http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/RangeMaxWirelessRoutersandGateways.aspx
●Software used: Microsoft – Word, Excel, Power Point, IE, Media Player Realtime Norton - because it has automatic security updates from the Internet Acrobat Reader Turbo Tax Quicken
Do NOT know what to do about going to Vista or 64 bit processor & the complications involved in having one Vista PC & the rest XP – If one PC goes out will we be able to move over to the other PCs? -Change all PCs to Vista? -what about 64 bit?
Looking for: ●A way to automatically backup the PCs (looking at SmartSync with NetGear SC101 Storage Central) & move the work from one PC to another if one goes out.
●A wireless Laptop that Bee can carry with her for business that has a port for a regular size screen, keyboard, power, wireless at home.
-keep the Laptop & one of the home PCs in sync would be helpful. -Internet Phone over PC helpful -Don’t like Finger-pad mouse – prefer Wireless or Roller-ball mouse -12.1 screen size looks like it would fit into a purse OK -long life battery helpful -AMD OK
>Pocket Pal too small to be practical – small PC more practical & useable
●Backup solutions I’ve found: http://www.netgear.com/upload/secondarycategory/networkstorage/network-storage_comparison_chart.pdf -SmartSync to Internet backup helpful if practical & reasonable.
●Laptops I’ve looked at: -HP
-Dell http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_dotw_inspn?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs Discount Details:

SUBJECT: Backup Iron Mountain has a backup facility online that you can use now to mitigate any potential data loss.
So does Geek Squad:
Microsoft has a good how to at:
Here's how you do back up to CD with home addition:
If you want to own the operation: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1090257,00.asp is probably best bang for the buck.
SUBJECT: Laptop You can get good deals at the day-old Dell Store
But the 1705 is a hell of a machine: I would strongly suggest getting the service package. It is well worth it.
I bought my daughter one of these 3 years ago and it's still a better machine than my new Toshiba.
I really don't like Vista, but as you said earlier your software requires Windows. You can't buy a new PC anymore without Vista. TIP: GET AS MUCH MEMORY AS YOU CAN BUY even if you have to get a slower processor. Vista is a memory hog!
SUBJECT: Printers etc. I kept a workstation (Dell 2400, 1GB memory, 7200 RPM 80 GB HDD, DVD, CD-RW) as a server for the printers, scanner, copier, USB hub. I connected the wireless router to my cable modem then connected the router to the Workstation. Share the printers, you never have a connectivity issue.
Vista and printer drivers are still weird but getting better.
SUBJECT: Mouse Any IR mouse will work with inspiron, you can use a USB mouse as well.
SUBJECT: Internet Phone I'm not a subject matter expert. Try http://www.skype.com/
SUBJECT: Security I have used Norton since version 1.0 Suggest buying multi-user version through Amazon.com cheapest way I have found.
SUBJECT: Hand Held I really like my Dell X51v but I think I will go back to PALM when this one dies. Either way I use it to synchronize data between my home PC and my work PC. Windows Mobile is highly compatible for the purpose. Going with a PALM TREO with phone and Windows Mobile is easy, convenient and very flexible. I think it's the best bet right now
Thank you for contacting timtuohy.com can I put this discussion on my website? I'll take your name off ...
